Rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court during the past decade have struck down the most extreme sentences imposed on children. As recently as 2005, it was legal in the United States to execute children. Since 2005, the Supreme Court has ruled in Roper v. Simmons, the XXXX CHILD STATUS MATTERS XXXXX.
The Court’s recent rulings have affirmed what research has proven: children are different from adults. They are still developing both physically and emotionally, and their brains, not just their bodies, are not yet fully mature. The justices have further affirmed that we should provide children with motivations and opportunities for rehabilitation and the potential for them to one day return to our communities as productive members of society.
