Letter urges Justice Department to review processes

The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, joined by a coalition of more than 60 national organizations representing a wide variety of issue areas, today submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, calling on the federal government to add scrutiny and accountability to its process for transferring youth to adult court, in an effort to comply with core tenets of the 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Miller v. Alabama. The ruling found that it is unconstitutional to impose a sentence of life without the possibility of parole upon an individual for a crime committed when younger than 18.
