James manages development, operations and finance strategies at the CFSY. He joined the CFSY as a Program Assistant in 2011. James became passionate about reforming the US criminal justice system after working with youth suspended or expelled from public schools in Washington, DC, and studying the rights of incarcerated people during his time as a paralegal & investigator at the American Civil Liberties Union. His experiences underscored the ways the US justice system fails to respect many of the rights of people charged with and convicted of crimes.
Wearing his development hat, James works with the people and institutions that allow the CFSY to exist. He identifies funding opportunities, manages grants, works with donors, plans events and gets to talk about the CFSY’s vital work with anyone who will listen. Since working to transition the CFSY from a fiscally-sponsored project to a standalone 501(c)(3) nonprofit, James has spearheaded organizational and financial operations and systems, as well as human resources administration.
When he’s not at his desk, James listens to his favorite pop music, reads music journalism, seeks out the nearest TCBY, and makes a mean Chemex.
