Job TitleState Strategist

Location:  Flexible. Extensive travel is required

Application Deadline:  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled

Organization:  The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY)

BACKGROUND: The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) works to end the practice of sentencing youth to life without the possibility of parole in the United States.  The CFSY collaborates with advocates across the United States and in Washington, DC that use public education, advocacy, and litigation as strategies to pursue this goal.  We work with active state campaigns and are advised by a committee of experts in the field.  The CFSY has a small staff that works closely in a friendly, collaborative work environment.

The State Strategist will partner with advocates in a handful of states to strengthen state campaigns to end juvenile life without parole (JLWOP) sentences.  The State Strategist will travel extensively in order to strategize with active coalitions on reform efforts, provide technical assistance to their campaigns, and build relationships with the coalitions, as well as with leaders and legislators in target states.  The State Strategist will develop customized strategies to end the sentence of JLWOP in specific states prioritized by the CFSY.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Acts as primary point person in prioritized states, assisting advocates and state coalitions in strategizing, conducting public education, expanding the coalition, and organizing supporters.

  • Identifies needs in the field in each prioritized state and determines how to meet those needs.

  • Builds relationships with key stakeholders in prioritized states, such as legislators, families, victims, faith leaders, and prosecutors.

  • Helps draft materials, organize events, and prepare fundraising requests when appropriate. Assists with strategic planning to help state coalitions establish goals and develop and implement their own strategies for reform.

  • Stays abreast of political opportunities and threats within the state—and nationally as it impacts the state—and helps the state coalition consider the political climate and position itself accordingly.

  • Analyzes litigation and legislative strategies to identify the best approach for a given state

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience in organizing, policy reform, or political campaigns, and a desire and ability to travel.  A strong interest in abolishing the sentence of juvenile life without parole is required.  Demonstrated ability to bring together people with differing opinions and perspectives is critical for this role.  A Bachelor’s degree is required.

  • Able to multi-task – can manage competing priorities, function under pressure, and meet short deadlines.

  • Excellent communicator – good oral and written communication skills. Honest and straightforward with questions and ideas.

  • Self-motivated – able to take the initiative to start new tasks and work diligently without much supervision.

  • Strategic – able to think through and work on issues critically and strategically.

  • Committed to working as a team – friendly and courteous, willing to work closely with CFSY staff and as part of the larger community working to end JLWOP.
